Science "Out of the Box"
Mr. Blevins experiences micro-gravity as part of Northrop Grumman Corporation's Weightless Flights of Discovery Program!
I love science and I love learning! I want to share the passion I have for both with students! One of my goals is to always motivate students to consider science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (S.T.E.M. fields) as a career choice. For insight into why I feel so strongly about this, read The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman
It'll change how you view the world and our future. To meet our future challenges, we all need to embrace the challenge of teaching our children to love learning and not be afraid to challenge themselves to enter S.T.E.M. fields!
How do I attempt to do this? By looking for ways to expose students to science "outside of the box". That is... outside of the textbook, classroom, etc. and showing them science in action whenever possible! Grand Teton/Yellowstone National Park Summer 2008 Educational Trip to... Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Teton National Park!
2007 Grand Canyon Adventure
*Mr. Blevins, and students traveled to the Grand Canyon! Activities included hiking the canyon, swimming at Slide Rock State Park, a float trip down the Colorado river, stops at museums, and hiking over lava flows. Students learned about geology, astronomy, botany, zoology, and life!
Splash Into Science! -Educational Science trip to Florida
*Mr. Blevins, his wife, and 35 students traveled to Florida and had the opportunity to study biology, ecology, geology, and chemistry in the Everglades National Park and Florida Keys. Activities included air boat rides in the Everglades, snorkeling, visiting a sea turtle hospital, hiking through sub-tropical forests, swimming with dolphins, and much more!!
B.G.S.U. "Women in Science" Program - Each year, young ladies from Huron have an opportunity to explore careers in science for the day! (Some choose to go back during the the summer and spend time on campus studying science for a few weeks as part of the R.E.A.L. Science program)
"Forensic Science Day" - On October 24th, Mr. Blevins and nine Huron High School students had the opportunity to explore the field of Forensic science at the Medical University of Ohio (formerly MCO). They learned the real science behind CSI and had the opportunity to talk with professionals in the field. Students learned firsthand from F.B.I. Evidence Response Team members, forensic paleontologists, toxicologists, coroners, forensic dentists, and other professionals involved in solving crimes.
"Bodies, the Exhibition"- Mr. Blevins and forty Biology II students had the chance to learn anatomy and physiology first hand. Students explored real preserved bodies from the inside out. The Columbus, Ohio exhibit on loan from China uses a process known as plastination to preserve the specimens for educational purposes.
