CHANGES TO SPEECH SERVICES

SMARTBOARD TECHNOLOGY IN THE SPEECH CLASSROOM

Speech students in the Shawnee and Woodlands buildings will enjoy interacting with lessons presented on the Smartboard.  What is a Smartboard?  It looks like a whiteboard connected to a computer and overhead projector.

Teachers can present a lesson idea using words, pictures, voice or sound tracks and can link to video and other media using the internet connection.  Kids can write, move words and letters, change colors, create drawings with shapes, produce sound, create their own presentations using multimedia all on the Smartboard.  And I haven't discovered all the capabilities yet!  Cool stuff!  You might want to try it out too!

Why?  Check out this website ...

                              3 : 1  SERVICE DELIVERY

Some students will receive services in a 3:1 model of delivery.  That means for 3 weeks the kids are seen in the speech room for classes, but for 1 week of the month the Speech Language Pathologist goes into their regular education classroom.  In the regular education classroom, the SLP can do any of the following services:  observe and tally behaviors to see if therapy is working in the classroom, aid the teacher in modifying work, delivery of lessons, or tests, create assistive equipment, or co-teach lessons.  Kids enjoy having two adults in their classes.  Teachers and the SLP are able to consult on students, focus on shared goals, and learn from each other.

Check out your students' IEP to see if 3:1 model is written into your child's IEP.  Read over the goals as well to see what you can help with at home.

                               Fast Track Articulation

If your child has one speech sound that he/ she needs to correct and strong language skills, Fast Track is a great delivery option for speech-language services.  Instead of the usual twice a week 30 minute sessions, your child's speech service is daily for 5-10 minute tucked into the school day.  One student is seen at a time for a quick visit to drill sound production from lists of words, phrases or sentences.  Time is packed with practice!

                                      Accelerated Reading

This program is starting up for all students at Shawnee Elementary and Woodlands Intermediate School.  You, as a parent can access the bookfinder to find a book's reading level (BL for book level) and the quiz number.  Your child chooses a book from home or from the public library or school library (my books from my classrooms are leveled already and available for loan as well). He or she reads the story, then logs on to AR on the Huron City Schools website (link to parents then to online learning spot) to take the test.  Each score is recorded in the student's record.  Keep your kids reading all summer!
